A Wink in the Dark

Writer: Mookie SpitzMookie Spitz

When what can’t be sent must still be said.

I know, that you know, that we both know, we think about each other. Our moods shift like water, from love that burns like fire.

We shared so many marvelous moments together! Only flickering memories remain.

We were perfect for each other until we were not. Maybe we should have stopped then, but the flame was still too bright.

I know now, like I knew then, you wished everyone to be happy. I wish I could have shown you how.

I hope you know now, how much I wished then, for you to be happy. I wish you could have shown me how.

The future illuminates the past, leaving us doubting the present. Maybe we could still be together, after all.

But we are not and cannot, for your happiness and mine. The shadows follow us into the night.

I wish we could be brave, but we are not. We collapse into each other’s arms within our minds’ eye.

But we cannot, though the emptiness is terrifying. Worse would be falling back.

You know, that I know, we both know, what I want to say to you. By saying that I already said it.

My lips sometimes move with no sounds. Goodbye… Hello… Goodbye… Hell…

Oh, did you say something? I wish you would, but do not. Within the darkness and silence, I see and hear you.
